*RARE* RAF MOSQUITO FLYING BOOTS GROUPING W/ PRU INTEREST - SIZE 9 1944 Dated
SOLD
For sale is a fascinating, named grouping to Aircraftman John Alexander, who served in 82 Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, RAF (stationed in Canada at the end of WW2, and later in Accra, West Africa, in the Post-War years).
The grouping consists of a beautiful pair of WW2 issue 'Mosquito' Boots, made by John White and dated 1944. Size 9. The boots are in superb, used condition, and entirely complete. They are unlined green suede, with leather soles and heels, and feature drawstring ties at the top of the uppers to prevent insect attacks (interestingly Alexander calls them 'Snake Boots' in the letter home to his wife included in the grouping). Whilst the boots were mainly issued to groundcrew, they became very popular with RAF pilots operating in the MTO as they were comfortable and easy to fly in. These boots are very rare and prove difficult to find these days. In my time collecting I have only ever seen a few pairs for sale.
Aside from the boots, other associated items of Alexander's are included in the sale. There is a pair of sandals (purchased in West Africa); various ephemera, consisting of correspondence home, and photos of Alexander wearing the boots; trade badges; and lastly two knives (one of military issue and the other no doubt purchased as a souvenir). Alexander mentions the equipment in his letter home (the letter is very long and goes into a lot of detail about the inhospitable perils of West African life. An illuminating read).
This is a really unique grouping with fascinating provenance.
Please note: if anyone is interested in the whole grouping I can only ship within the UK, but I am happy to accommodate international sales if the buyer is happy for only the non-bladed items to be shipped.
