RAF 'BATTLE OF BRITAIN' ORIGINAL D TYPE OXYGEN MASK UNBRAIDED HOSE

RAF 'BATTLE OF BRITAIN' ORIGINAL D TYPE OXYGEN MASK UNBRAIDED HOSE

SOLD

For sale is an extremely rare, unbraided version of the D Type Oxygen Mask hose. 6D/80.

The D Type Oxygen Mask was introduced in the 1930s, and utilised a constant flow oxygen system which necessitated a 5ft length of rubber tubing, complete with Mark IIIB * (6D/101) connector, to enable fitting to the aircraft's oxygen system. Whilst the hoses came in a variety of finishes, the final iteration consisted of a length of unbraided hose in black rubber, usually with three yellow bands to denote its use as a piece of oxygen equipment. Numerous photos show this type of hose in use during the Battle of Britain, and consequently this particular hose is highly sought after by Battle of Britain collectors.

Most original hoses - if you can find one - have not survived well, with the majority hardening or splitting completely. This particular hose is in the middle ground. The rubber has hardened somewhat, and is flaky in sections, although it can be gently manipulated to display well. I do believe this is its 'final form' and it will not deteriorate further if stored corrrectly. I can advise the buyer on ways to better work the hose so it can complete a display.

Original hoses for the D Type Oxygen Mask are extremely rare, and most collectors would be forgiven for investing in a reproduction to complete a display. This is a unique opportunity to obtain an original hose, used during the Battle of Britain.

Priced at less than a third of what this would be worth if it was in perfect confition. You may never find another.
