RAF TYPE B FLYING HELMET, UNMODIFIED - SIZE 2
SOLD
For sale is a reasonable example of an RAF Type B flying helmet in its unmodified state. Size 2. 22C/65.
This particular example is Air Ministry made, which in my experience are some of the nicest quality Type B Helmets. Typical features are thick padding to the forehead/brow section, and thick, quality leather straps.
This particular helmet looks to have seen considerable use. The exterior leather is rather worn, with the top crown section showing areas where the chroming has worn off. This is evident too in various parts of the helmet, though I believe the helmet is stable to any further deterioration.
The side snaps have some verdigris deposits, which could be cleaned off.
Both Bennett’s buckles have lost their leather covers, and the rear buckle appears to have lost part of the locking mechanism, with the strap instead being looped through the quick release pull. This could well be a period modification, as the strap looks to have always been secured this way.
Inside the helmet is soiled, but still retains its original label indicating the helmet is a size 2. Faint AID stamping.
Overall a fair example of this pattern of Type B, which are getting harder to find now.
