RAF TYPE B FLYING HELMET, SIZE 4. RARE MAKER.

RAF TYPE B FLYING HELMET, SIZE 4. RARE MAKER.

SOLD

For sale here is a beautiful example of a rare, wartime Type B Flying Helmet made by G. Waddington & Son. 1941 dated. Size 4 (6 7/8 - 7). 22C/65.

This particular helmet is straight out of my own private collection, and is a lovely example of a Waddington Helmet in the rare and sought-after Size 4 (the largest size made). Size 4 helmets are very hard to come by these days, especially with a maker's label such as Waddington.

Typical of this maker, the helmet is nicely padded, with dark, juicy leather and a large brow section that tapers higher than most other makers. The overall condition is good to very good. Internally the helmet shows service use, and the chamois is soiled and rather grubby. Both Bennett's buckles retain their leather covers; all zips operate smoothly, and both retain their leather pullers which feel nice and strong. The chin-strap still retains its original metal end-tip. The only flaws that I can see consist of a a few tiny holes in the chamois lining, and a small hole to the right ear cushion.

The helmet is named, with the initials ADA and the name Andrews appearing. I have not attempted any research.

Both ear units retain their rubber receiver carriers, and leather pullers, though no rubber donuts have been installed. The helmet is sold unwired.

This is an exceptional helmet which makes a great display piece, so synonymous with the Battle of Britain. A very rare helmet in this size and manufactured by this specific maker.
