RAF TYPE B FLYING HELMET, FRANK BRYAN, 1939 - SIZE 2
SOLD
For sale here is a great example of a rare, pre-war Type B Flying Helmet made by Frank Bryan. 1939 dated. Size 2 (6 7/8 - 7). 22C/65.
Typical of this maker, the helmet is nicely padded, with dark, juicy leather and thick, strong straps. The overall condition is in good to very good condition. Internally the helmet shows service use, and the chamois is soiled and rather grubby. Both Bennett's buckles retain their leather covers; all zips operate smoothly, and both retain their leather pullers which feel nice and strong. The chin-strap still retains its original metal end-tip. The only flaws that I can see consist of a a few tiny holes in the chamois lining. The helmet is marked '73' inside, and I have made no attempt to trace this, though it could connect to 73 squadron who famously fought in both the Battle of France and Battle of Britain.
Externally the helmet is very sound with no dryness or flakiness to the leather. Across the top panel there a couple of nips to the leather, and the brow panel has some loose stitching, but overall the leather is in excellent shape given the service use.
The helmet is sold unwired, but does still retain its original receiver carriers inside the ear units; one bakelite and one rubber as is often the case with these early helmets. The helmet will come with a pair of RCAF ear cushions.
This is a great example of the Type B Flying Helmet and makes a great display piece, so synonymous with the Battle of Britain.
