RAF MARK IVB FLYING GOGGLES + RARE EARLY FLIPSHIELD
SOLD
For sale are a scarce pair of RAF Mark IVB Flying Goggles, complete with the very rare first pattern "screen, antiglare" with the long-exposed spring mechanism. 22C/167.
The goggles are in very nice condition, with almost all of the original paintwork to the frames (these are finished in the more obscure matt-brown satin finish). Unusually the rear rubber pads are still in nice condition and are moderately supple; most are perished.
The goggles are complete with their original flipshield (22C/133), with this variation the rarest of them all. This particular iteration was extremely fragile, and consequently one can see where the screen has been repaired to each corner. This does not affect the way the goggles display, and all versions of this flipshield I have own have encountered this damage. Delamination to the lenses (all original).
The strap and sprung loops are all lovely, with the springs still flexible, and the strap itself nicely marked with crisp stampings.
Overall a lovely pair of these scarce Battle of Britain goggles.
