RAF ‘BATTLE OF BRITAIN’ MARK IV FLYING GOGGLES - 22C/111
SOLD
For sale from my private Battle of Britain collection are a marvellous pair of RAF Mark IV Flying Goggles, 22C/111.
These Mark IV flying goggles are the first iteration of the Mark IV Goggle series, and not to be confused with the more readily available IVBs. These early, first pattern Mark IVs were finished with solid brass frames which housed hinged lenses, the concept being that the pilot or aircrew could change the lenses for tinted ones if need be. In practice the goggles were cumbersome and the lens mechanism prone to damage.
These particular goggles are in lovely condition, with the majority of their original blackened finish still in place. They retain the original central nut, and all of the original lenses, which are still very clear with only slight delamination.
This particular version are a scarce pair made by Levers Optical Co with the rear padding finished in velvet, rather than chamois.
The strap is nicely marked and the sprung loops still in great condition. There is a slight repair to one of the loops where the cotton covering has been twined, but it is almost invisible once displayed.
Overall these are a superb pair of goggles, and one of the rarest to find of those used during the Battle of Britain.
